Last evening, after finishing up my work for the day, I went out for a stroll under the full moon. I stopped at the end of my driveway and looked up from beneath the branches of our giant burr oak. The moon was just cresting over the hill. Light cascaded through the valley and moonshadows began to grow, while stars emerged against the deep blue of late twilight. They were shining and singing the way they do only when the temperature drops into the teens. I continued down the road, along my neighbor’s field. The grass had frosted over, and under the moon, sparkled and shimmered. If not for the crunch of my boots, I would have felt as if I was floating in a sea of light.

An individual star is beautiful. That first one that seemingly appears out of nowhere just after sunset—it’s mesmerizing. A whole sky of stars will take your breath away. And when we attune to the connections between the stars—the constellations—a web of magic and meaning begins to take form.

Dear ones, you are my web. Thank you for making this work brighter than I ever could alone. For shimmering alongside me. For constellating with me.

In the past I’ve found that when I invest a lot of energy into holiday promotion (especially during cold and flu season), I’ve ended up getting pretty sick. It’s depleting! So instead I intentionally chose to spend the long weekend connecting with loved ones, cooking elaborate meals, and exploring the land I live on.
